A Comprehensive Guide to NEET UG: Eligibility, Application, Exam, Results


National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test – UG (NEET UG) 

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET UG) has been conducted by NTA since 2019 for admission to undergraduate medical education, with the approval of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and MHRD. Admission to the courses like MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BSMS, BUMS, and BHMS are provided through NEET UG. NTA's responsibilities are restricted to accepting online applications, administering the entrance exam, announcing the results, and sending the All India Rank (AIR) to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India's Directorate General of Health Services.

NEET UG Application Process

    • The candidates need to register for the online application form and note down the system-generated application number.
    • The second part of the application process is filling out the application form. Candidates need to log in with the system-generated application number and pre-created password to complete the application form.
    • The candidates need to upload scanned images of recent Passport size Photographs, Postcard size Photographs, Signatures, Left and Right-hand Fingers and Thumb impressions, Citizenship certificates (if applicable), and PwBD certificates (wherever applicable).
    • The candidates must pay the requisite examination fee, which can be submitted online only through Net Banking, Credit Card, Debit Card, or UPI.

NEET UG Eligibility Criteria

    • The candidates must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete that age on or before 31 December of the year of their admission.
    • Indian Citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) intending to pursue Undergraduate Medical Courses in a foreign Medical or dental Institute must also qualify for NEET (UG).
    • NRIs, OCI, and Foreign Nationals are eligible for admission in Medical /Dental Colleges subject to rules and regulations framed by the respective State Governments, Institutions, and the Government of India, as the case may be.

NEET UG Exam

The syllabus includes subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. It includes topics covered in these three subjects from Class 10 to Class 12.

The Pattern of the Test

The test pattern of NEET UG comprises four Subjects, each consisting of two sections. There is a negative marking for every wrong answer. For every correct answer, 4 marks are given, and for every unanswered question, zero marks are given.

Duration of Test

The duration of the Test is three (03) hours and 20 minutes.

Medium of the Question Papers

NEET UG is conducted in English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

Cities for Exam Centres for NEET UG

The exam is conducted across various test centers located across India. While filling out the application form, the candidates can select 2 cities of their choice. Choice of Centre Cities are limited to the State of Permanent Address or State of Present Address only.

NEET UG Admit Card –

The admit card is issued provisionally to the candidates, subject to the fulfillment of the eligibility conditions. The candidate has to download the admit card from the NTA website and appear for the examination at the given center on the date and time indicated in their admit card.

NEET UG Test Day Procedure

The following items are barred at the test centers –

    • Any item like textual material (printed or written), bits of paper, a Geometry/Pencil Box, a Plastic Pouch, a Calculator, a Pen, a Scale, a Writing Pad, Pen Drives, an Eraser, a Calculator, a Log Table, an Electronic Pen or scanner, etc.
    • Any communication device like Mobile Phone, Bluetooth, Earphones, Microphone, Pager, Health Band, etc.
    • Other items like Wallet, Goggles, Handbags, Belt, Cap, etc.
    • Any Watch/Wristwatch, Bracelet, Camera, etc.
    • Any ornaments/metallic items.
    • Any food items opened or packed water bottles, etc.
    • Any other item that could be used for unfair means, by hiding communication devices like a microchip, camera, Bluetooth device, etc.

NEET UG Results –

When a candidate has any questions about the answer key that is posted on the website, they can challenge it by using the provisional answer key that is displayed by the NTA. The NTA uses a panel of subject matter experts to verify the challenges that the candidates have made. The key finalized after the challenges are treated as final and are displayed on the NTA website before the declaration of the result. The Answer Sheets are assessed by the National Testing Agency in accordance with established practice, and the results are posted on the NTA website. After that, candidates can download their respective scorecards.

NEET UG Tiebreaker Criteria

    • Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by,
    • Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Physics in the Test, followed by,
    • Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Chemistry in the Test, followed by,
    • Candidate with less proportion of the number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all the subjects in the Test,
    • Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by
    • Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Chemistry in the Test, followed by
    • Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Physics in the Test, followed by

NEET UG Merit List

The Ministry of AYUSH/NCISM/NCH /AACCC and other applicable regulations/guidelines, as well as the qualifying/eligibility requirements and other rules, are taken into consideration by the NTA for preparing the Merit List/All India Rank (AIR).

NEET UG Admission Procedure

    • Admissions to all seats of Undergraduate Medical / Dental Courses are done through NEET UG.
    • Counseling for admission to seats under the control of State Governments/ UT Administrations / State Universities/ Institutions is conducted by the designated authorities of the State Governments as per the notifications issued separately by the authorities concerned.
    • During counseling, the eligibility criteria, self-declaration, various documents, etc., of the eligible candidates shall be verified as per norms specified by the respective authorities and/or Medical / Dental Colleges.
    • AACCC (Ayush Admission Central Counselling Committee), M/o Ayush is the counselling authority for AIQ with respect to BAMS, BUMS and BSMS courses under NCISM.
    • 5An All India Merit List of qualified candidates is prepared based on the All India Rank in the Merit List of the NEET UG, and candidates are admitted to Undergraduate Medical Courses from the said list only, with the existing reservation policy.
