All You Need To Know About Iit- Jee Advanced Examination

The Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced) is an entrance exam conducted for admission to various undergraduate engineering courses offered by the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). It is the second stage of the selection process, preceded by the JEE Main exam. Only those candidates who qualify for the JEE Main exam are eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced. A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

Students who score well in JEE Advanced get opportunities for admission to undergraduate courses like B.Tech, B.Sc., B.Arch, Dual Degree, and B.Tech-M.Tech, Integrated M.Tech, etc., offered by the IITs and some other prestigious institutes like Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) Thiruvananthapuram, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) Rae Bareli, and Indian Institute of Petroleum & Energy (IIPE) Visakhapatnam.

Joint Entrance Examination - Advanced, earlier known as IIT - JEE, is an annual academic examination for the students coveting to join India’s some of the most elite institutes. It is organized by one of the seven “OLD” IITs in India in tandem with the Joint Admission Board. This examination takes it forward from here to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology(IITs). And that’s not it, there’s also a provision for the people who wish to study architecture. They can take the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) conducted by 7 Zonal coordinating Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for admission in the 5-years long Bachelors of Architecture (B.Arch) program offered by the top three IITs: IIT Kharagpur, IIT - BHU Varanasi, and IIT Roorkee. This is an annual examination and the most important criteria for giving this examination is to qualify for JEE Advanced after the JEE - Main examination.

The admissions in the B.Arch courses are not based on the candidate’s AAT rank/score but on their ranks in the JEE-Advanced examination. So, you’re required to keep that in mind while going in this direction.

JEE Advanced Application Process

• Candidates must register to appear for JEE Advanced. Registration is to be done only through the online registration portal, where detailed instructions are provided.
• The candidates need to pay the registration fee as prescribed in the prospectus released every year.
• Candidates who desire to use the services of a scribe must opt for this during online registration.

The following are the documents needed for Registration –

• Class X certificate if the date of birth is mentioned in it OR birth certificate.
• Class XII (or equivalent examination) certificate.
• If the candidate’s name is different from that on the Class X certificate, a gazette notification will show the change of name needs to be submitted.
• Category certificate (if applicable).

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria –

• Candidates should be among the top 250000 successful candidates (including all categories) in the BE/B Tech paper of JEE Main conducted in the same year.
• Candidates must meet the age criteria, which are fixed. SC, ST, and PwD candidates are given five years of age relaxation.
• A candidate should have cleared Class XII (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
• The candidates who were allocated a seat in an IIT through JoSAA the previous year but (i) did not report “online” or at any “reporting center” OR (ii) withdrew before the last round of seat allotment OR (iii) had their seat canceled (for whatever reason) before the last round of seat allotment for IITs are eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced).

JEE Advanced Admit Card –

Candidates who successfully complete the registration process can download the admit card from the online registration portal. The admit card bears the following details of the candidate: name, roll number, photograph, signature, date of birth, address for correspondence, and category. In addition, the admit card has the name and address of the examination center allotted to the candidate.

JEE Advanced Exam Details –

• The exam is conducted only in the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode.
• Each candidate is allotted a computer terminal (node) at the test center.
• JEE Advanced will consist of two question papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2, each three hours long. Appearing for both papers is compulsory.

• The question papers consist of questions designed to test the comprehension, reasoning, and analytical ability of candidates.
• Negative marks may be awarded for incorrect answers to some of the questions. Details of the marking scheme are provided in the “Instructions to Candidates” section at the time of the examination.
• The question papers will be in both English and Hindi. Candidates will have the option to choose (and switch between) their preferred language anytime during the examination.

JEE Advanced Exam Answer Keys –

The provisional answer keys for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be displayed on the JEE Advanced online portal. After the provisional answer keys are displayed, the candidates can submit their feedback, if any, on the candidate portal. The final answer keys are displayed on the website after considering the candidates’ feedback.

JEE Advanced Rank Lists

Only candidates who appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are considered for ranking. The aggregate marks obtained by a candidate in JEE Advanced are the sum of the marks awarded to the candidate in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Rank lists are prepared based on the aggregate marks. Only those candidates who score the minimum prescribed marks in each subject and in aggregate will be included in the rank list.

JEE Advanced Tiebreaker

• Candidates with higher positive marks will be awarded a higher rank.
• A higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in mathematics.

JEE Advanced Results –

After the results are declared, category-wise All India Rankings (AIR) of successful candidates are available through the JEE Advanced online portal. Individual rank cards are not sent to candidates.

Types of Questions

Breaking it down into parts, the examination consists of 2 papers in general: Paper -1 & Paper -2. The candidates are required to appear for both and qualify them individually to crack this examination.

Single Correct type

These have four options, out of which only one is correct.

Multiple Correct type

The marking scheme varies accordingly in these types of questions. There is a high possibility of finding more than one correct option although sometimes, there’s just one correct response.

Single-digit Answer type

These are the questions with integer type correct answers, which are to be entered using the keyboard.

Matrix Match type

These are the ‘match the column’ questions, wherein the student has to correctly pair the terms written on both sides of the table.

Comprehension-based Questions

These contain the passage-based questions, where the comprehension passage is a short snippet from the subject book.

Sure, we accept the top 2,50,000 candidates from the JEE-Mains examination and they can appear for the JEE-ADVANCED examination.

What should I do if I’ve already taken admission in one of the preparatory courses offered by IITs? Can I give the ADVANCED examination?

Yes, you are eligible to give the exam.

I mentioned an incorrect category while filling out my JEE-Mains application form. Is there a way out of this?

Unfortunately, you can’t make the amendments, once declared wrongly.

Last year, I was admitted to one of the NITs after my JEE results came out. I’m planning to take a chance this year and want to give the JEE-ADVANCED examination. Is this possible as per the rules?

Is it mandatory to write both papers in the JEE-ADVANCED examination?

Yes, it is necessary. One needs to qualify both papers to crack this examination. Hence, leaving any one of them will ruin your candidature.

What will happen if, for some reason, I couldn’t appear for one of the papers? Will my results be declared?

No, your results neither would be prepared nor declared in that case.

I have some conveyance issues at my end. Is there a provision for transport facility from the board’s side?

No, we don’t provide any sort of transportation facilities, but we can ensure you by giving you the flexibility in choosing your exam cities. The number has been increased to 6, starting this year.

What all documents should I upload on the registration portal?

You should have the following documents at the time of registration:

• Category certificate
• Scribe form (for specially abled students)
• Class 10th and 12th mark sheets
