Salient features and cardinal details of the Telangana Open School Society (TOSS), 2024

About the BoardOpen and Distance Learning (ODL) foundations were laid in Telangana in the Form of Telangana Open School Society (TOSS), a self-autonomous society registered under the Andhra Pradesh Public Societies Act on 20th February 1991. With this, it became the first School of India to provide all levels of continuous education through ODL pedagogy to anyone and everyone who couldn't opt to complete their studies for any reason. The program aims to empower the working population, girls, rural youth, adult neo-literates, differently-abled people, SCs, STs, and school drop-outs by providing them with skill up-gradation opportunities through innovative technologies and sustainable learner-centric quality school education. Since the moment of its inception, TOSS has endeavored to make the Universalization of Elementary Education (UEE) a reality in the state.?

Recognition & Approvals

TOSS has been approved and recognized as a member by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), and the Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE), an Association of National and State School Education Boards, as well as by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT).?

Admission process and online registration

1. The learner has got to obtain Prospectus/Admission Form, free of cost, from the Accredited Institute (Study Centre) of their choice.

2. Must go through the Prospectus thoroughly. After meeting the eligibility criteria in all respects, fill in two sets of the Form (Original and Duplicate), in the Prospectus at Appendix-A/B.

3. After scrutinizing the Form, the AI Coordinator will attest to them with a seal and signature.

4. Applicant need not pay any amount at AI Centre.

5. The Enclosures and the Original copy of the Form are to be submitted to the study Center Coordinator.

6. Take a Duplicate copy of the application to the 'MeeSeva' centre and pay the Registration Fee. Finally, upload the ONLINE application. For  utilizing MeeSeva, you will have to additionally pay Rs. 10/- apart from TOSS fees.

7. You will receive a Printout copy of the ONLINE registered Application and fee receipt. 

8. The District Coordinator will carry out the corrections in ONLINE application.

9. ONLINE Registration of Application does not guarantee Admission.

10. If the Application is incomplete, without Photo, Signature, or enclosures, the Form will be rejected.

11. The Admission Fee, once paid, won't be refunded. ?

TOSS started the SSC courses from 2008-09 through the Accredited Institutes (AIs) and the Intermediate courses from 2010-11 onwards.

Exams conducted by TOSS

TOSS conducts two major exams:  

1) The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam for 10th graders

2) The Intermediate exam for (10+2)th graders?

Eligibility criteria for SSC exam:

Anyone of the following documents-

1. Transfer Certificate (TC) (If discontinued in school stage)

2. The student should be over 14 years of age

3. Birth Certificate?

Eligibility criteria for Intermediate exam:

1. Passed in SSC or its Equivalent exam/should be Intermediate Drop-Out

2. Should have a one-year gap after SSC to complete Intermediate in one year?

Awards and achievements

TOSS has reached an important mile stone in its pursuit to reach out to the drop-outs of the main stream education by starting the SSC (TOSS) course and the Intermediate (TOSS). It had indeed come a long way, after being launched with a tiny step when Telangana Government aimed at enhancing the transition rate from Class V to Class VI by attracting drop-outs to Open School through ODL mode.?

CLASS - X

To obtain the SSC passing certificate, a student must pass in five subjects (including one or a maximum of two language papers from group 'A' and two subjects from group 'B'). One can take up a vocational subject from group 'C', adding the number of subjects to five. If not, they can select the fifth subject either from group 'A' (limited to 2 subjects) or from group 'B'. Students are free to take one additional subject as well. ?

CLASS - XII

To obtain the intermediate passing certificate, a student must clear a minimum of five subjects (including one or a maximum of two languages from group A and a minimum of two subjects from group B). Students can also opt for a vocational subject from group 'C'. If not, they can take the fifth subject from group 'A' (limited to 2 subjects) or from group 'B' (3 or 4 subjects) that adds up to five subjects. However, candidates are allowed to select one subject as an additional.?

Features and flexibilities in TOSS

1. Subject Choice: Any subject combination can be chosen from the Group lists, offered as per the criteria given in the Scheme.  

2. Medium of Instruction in your preferred language: TOSS offers its SSC course in English, Hindi, Urdu, Telugu, and Oriya media.

3. Age limit: There is no maximum age limit for admission, but the subject needs to be over 14 years of age as of 31st August of the year of admission.

Q. Are certificates from open schools valid?

A. The certificates issued by TOSS is equivalent to Intermediate/SSC at their levels and is valid for applying to all higher education institutions and Government Jobs.

Q. What all levels are covered in Open Schooling?

A. Open Schooling involves educating from the pre-elementary level and right up to the Pre-degree level.?
