Primary Courses under Defence Services

National Defence Academy (NDA)

NDA is the joint services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services—the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force—train together before they go on to pre-commissioning training in their respective service academies. It was established in 1954 and offers undergraduate programs for three years, leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Technology degree.

Air Force Academy (AFA)

The AFA is an institution dedicated to training officers for the Indian Air Force (IAF). It's one of the premier institutions in the country for grooming future air warriors. Located in Dundigal, Hyderabad, it offers training programs that include academics, physical fitness, leadership development, and military skills. Cadets undergo rigorous training to prepare them for the challenges of serving in the Air Force.

Indian Military Academy (IMA)

IIMA is the premier officer training institution of the Indian Army, located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. It was established in 1932 and trains officers for the Indian Army. It offers various officers' courses, ranging from pre-commissioning training to post-commissioning courses. Upon graduation, cadets are commissioned as officers in the Indian Army and posted to various units across the country.

Officers Training Academy (OTA)

OTA is an Indian Army training establishment that trains officers for the Short Service Commission. It was established in 1963 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and primarily trains cadets through the Short Service Commission (SSC) scheme, which means officers can serve for a limited duration. A new academy was set up at Gaya in 2011.

Indian Naval Academy (INA)

INA is the Indian Navy's initial officer training establishment. Located in Ezhimala, Kerala, it trains officers of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. The academy was established in 1969.

Admission Process for Defence Courses

National Defence Academy (NDA)

Admissions to NDA are through a competitive entrance examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year. Candidates must qualify for a written test followed by an interview by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

Air Force Academy (AFA)

Candidates can apply through CDSE or the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT), conducted by the Indian Air Force. Selected candidates undergo SSB interviews for final selection.

Indian Military Academy (IMA)

Candidates can apply through the Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) conducted by the UPSC. Successful candidates undergo SSB interviews for final selection.

Officers Training Academy (OTA)

Candidates can apply through CDSE. Both men and women can apply for OTA. Selected candidates undergo SSB interviews for final selection.

Indian Naval Academy (INA)

Admissions to INA are also through CDSE. Candidates undergo SSB interviews for final selection.
