Understanding MBBS Admission Procedures

MBBS refers to a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, which is a 5.5-year course. It is an undergraduate degree in medical science, and admissions are based on the entrance exam NEET UG conducted annually by the National Testing Agency (NTA), followed by a counseling process. The course curriculum has nine semesters, followed by a compulsory six-month internship period. After obtaining the MBBS course, the individuals will be qualified as medical practitioners or doctors.

MBBS application process -

    • The applicants need to register for the online application form for NEET UG and note down the system-generated application number.
    • The second part of the application process is filling out the application form. Applicants need to log in with the system-generated application number and pre-created password to complete the application form.
    • The applicants need to upload scanned images of recent passport-size photographs, postcard-size photographs, signatures, left and right-hand fingers and thumb impressions, citizenship certificates (if applicable), and PwBD certificates (where applicable).
    • The applicants must pay the requisite examination fee, which can be submitted online only through Net Banking, credit card, debit card, or UPI.

MBBS Eligibility Criteria -

    • The applicants must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete that age on or before December 31 of the year of their admission.
    • Indian Citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) intending to pursue undergraduate medical courses in a foreign medical institute must also qualify for NEET UG.
    • NRIs, OCIs, and foreign nationals are eligible for admission to medical colleges, subject to rules and regulations framed by the respective state governments, institutions, and the government of India, as the case may be.

MBBS Entrance Exam -

    • Admit Card - The admit card is issued provisionally to the applicants, subject to the fulfillment of the eligibility conditions. The applicant has to download the admit card from the NTA website and appear for the examination at the given center on the date and time indicated in their admit card.

    • Exam Syllabus - The syllabus includes subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology. It includes topics covered in these three subjects, from Class 10 to Class 12.

    • The Pattern of the Test - The test comprises four subjects, each consisting of two sections. There is a negative marking for every wrong answer. For every correct answer, 4 marks are given, and for every unanswered question, zero marks are given.

    • Duration of Test - The duration of the test is three hours and 20 minutes.

    • Medium of the Question Papers – The MBBS entrance test is conducted in English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

    • Cities for Exam Centers - The exam is conducted across various test centers located across India. While filling out the application form, the candidates can select two cities of their choice. The choice of center cities is limited to the state of permanent address or the state of present address only.

MBBS Entrance Exam Results -

When applicants have any questions about the answer key posted on the website, they can challenge it by using the provisional answer key that the NTA displays. The NTA uses a panel of subject-matter experts to verify the challenges that the applicants have faced. The key finalized after the challenges is treated as final and is displayed on the NTA website before the declaration of the result. The National Testing Agency assesses the answer sheets in accordance with established practice, and the results are posted on the NTA website. After that, applicants can download their respective scorecards.

MBBS Entrance Exam Tiebreaker Criteria

    • Applicant obtaining higher marks/percentile scores in Biology (Botany and Zoology) in the test, followed by,
    • Applicant obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Chemistry in the test, followed by,
    • Applicant obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Physics in the test, followed by,
    • Applicant with less proportion of the number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all the subjects in the test,
    • Applicant with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the test, followed by
    • Applicant with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Chemistry in the test, followed by
    • Applicant with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Physics in the test, followed by

MBBS Counseling Process

After the entrance exam results are declared, qualified applicants are referred for counseling sessions. The counseling for admission to the seats under the control of State Governments/ UT Administrations / State Universities/ Institutions is conducted by the designated authorities of the State Governments as per the notifications issued separately by the authorities concerned. During counseling, the eligibility criteria, self-declaration, various documents, etc. of the eligible applicants are verified as per norms specified by the respective authorities and/or Medical Colleges.

An All India Merit List of the qualified candidates is prepared based on the All India Rank in the Merit List of the NEET UG, and applicants are admitted from the said list only with the existing reservation policy. NTA only provides All India Rank to applicants, while Admitting Authorities will invite applications for counseling, and a merit list is drawn based on All India Rank by the Admitting Authorities. Admission within the respective categories is based solely on the All India Rank as per the merit list of NEET UG.

MBBS Seat Allotment -

Seats are allotted to applicants based on their rank in the entrance exam and the availability of seats in various medical colleges. The counseling process may involve multiple rounds, depending on the number of seats available and the number of applicants participating.

MBBS Admission Process -

Once the applicants are allotted a seat, they need to report to the respective medical college within the stipulated time frame to complete the admission formalities. This usually involves document verification, payment of fees, and submission of necessary certificates.

    • All India Quota Seats
    • State Government Quota Seats
    • Central Institutions/Universities/Deemed Universities
    • State/Management/NRI Quota Seats in Private Medical Colleges or Any Private University
    • Central Pool Quota Seats
    • All seats, including the NRI Quota as well as the Management Quota, are in private unaided, aided minority, or non-minority medical colleges
    • AIIMS Institutes across India/JIPMER

MBBS Reservation Policy -

The Indian government and state governments have reservation policies for certain categories, such as Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD). These policies vary from state to state.
