Introduction
Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies (VISTAS) is a college of higher education located in Pallavaram, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It was founded in 1992 by Dr. Ishari K. Ganesh, a visionary and eminent educationist. In 2008, the University Grants Commission granted the institute deemed university status under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. The VAELS Trust supports VISTAS, which seeks to transform students into versatile professionals and accomplished human beings.
An experienced and qualified team of board members propels VISTAS forward. The Board of Management comprises members from UGC and members from different industries and sectors, eminent persons outside academia, senior officials, and renowned academicians. It follows the semester pattern and Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) for all its academic courses, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Admission
Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies admissions for various academic courses are organised on an all-India basis. All leading newspapers, both regional and national, as well as the official website, publish admission notifications. The institution publishes an institutional prospectus every year. The admissions process begins with candidates' registration for eligible courses.
For undergraduate courses, the candidates must have completed 12th grade, and for postgraduate courses, they must have completed 12th grade followed by a bachelor's degree of at least 3 years duration.
Entrance exams are conducted for professional courses. For all the professional courses, admissions are based on marks scored in the entrance examination and qualifying examinations. Both examinations receive equal weight. The entrance test is being conducted every year on an all-India basis to attract meritorious students from different parts of the country. Admissions are determined solely by merit and the rule of reservation.
A merit list is prepared for candidates who are selected. For maritime studies, a medical examination takes place. Based on merit, provisional selection is done. Interview cards are given to candidates. Those who make it through the interview process receive admission cards. The candidates who get admission cards need to pay the fee to complete the admission process. During the admissions process, candidates need to submit original certificates for verification.
For PhD and M.Phil. courses, applications are invited on an all-India basis. The concerned school or department conducts a common entrance test, followed by an interview specific to their research interest or area. The concerned heads of schools or departments organize the evaluation of the candidates' entrance test papers, tabulating the marks obtained along with those from the interview. The supervisors assign the eligible candidates based on the available vacancies, their field of specialization, and their research interests, as disclosed during the interview. The national and state-level reservation policies are being followed for the selection of candidates for the doctoral Program.
